How to Paint Timber Decking

Staining or Painting decking is a relatively straight forward task but it is worthwhile reading our quick ‘How to’ guide before you get started.

Tools for the job:

Decking brush | Paint brush | Masking tape | Protective gloves | Decking stain

Step 1

Clean the decking. Make sure the surface of your timber is clean, sanded and ready to absorb the stain. If you already have existing paint you wish to remove, use Ronseal Decking Stripper to strip back the coatings to bare wood.

Step 2

Wear protective gloves and use masking tape to protect any areas of the deck that you down't want to paint.

Step 3

Thoroughly mix the decking stain to ensure all the pigment is evenly mixed throughout the tin and will help give you a consistent finish.

Step 4

Using a paintbrush, start by 'cutting in' to stain the edges and corners first, then using long brush strokes along the grain of the wood.

Step 5

Continue to stain the rest of your deck area, when you are finished, remove the masking tape while the stain is still wet.

Top tip: Avoid walking on the decking for at least 24hrs
