5 ways to make your garden feel festive this Christmas

Christmas will be here before we know it, and while most of the preparation tends to happen indoors, there’s no reason the garden should miss out on the festivities. As the nights get darker and the weather turns colder, even a few simple touches can make your outdoor space feel brighter, more welcoming and ready for the season.

At Estate Sawmills, we supply everything from timber and landscaping essentials to composite fencing and gates, so we know a thing or two about making the most of an outdoor space. If you’re looking for tips on how to decorate your garden this Christmas, we’ve put together some simple ideas to help you get started, whether you fancy a quick afternoon project or something a little more hands-on.

1. Brighten your garden with Christmas lighting

When thinking about how to decorate your garden for Christmas, lighting is one of the best places to start. With the evenings getting dark so early, even a few well-placed lights can make your outdoor space feel warmer and more inviting.

Start by looking at the features you already have. If you have a tree in the garden, wrap outdoor fairy lights around the trunk and gently wind them through a few of the larger branches. You don’t need to cover every branch; leaving some of the tree unlit will give the display a more natural look. Smaller trees and large potted plants can work just as well.

If you’re buying new lights, it’s worth thinking about which style will work best for the area you’re decorating:

  • Cluster lights – with their bulbs packed together, cluster lights create a fuller, more vibrant sparkle. Wrapped around a tree or shrub, you’ll get a bright, twinkling display with plenty of impact.

  • Icicle lights – creating a cascading curtain of light, they're perfect for adding a classic Christmas look to your garden.

  • Net lights – rather than winding individual bulbs through branches, the whole net sits over a bush or shrub. This gives you an even, consistent glow and makes larger areas much quicker to decorate.

  • Fairy lights – a great way of adding a more subtle glow and creating a cosy, magical atmosphere at Christmas.

  • Coloured lights – choosing bulbs in festive shades like red and green produces a lively, playful effect, perfect if you have kids or are planning on hosting over Christmas.

As well as the style of the lights, it’s important to think about colour temperature. For a cosy and welcoming feel, choose warm white lights, which work really well with greenery, wooden decorations and natural textures. To create a more frosty feel alongside white decorations or silvery foliage, consider cool white lights for a crisp, wintry effect.

2. Choose a festive focal point for your garden

If you’re not sure where to begin, or you simply don’t want to go overboard with the decorations, it can be helpful to choose one part of your garden to become the main attraction. This could be anything from a festive scene on the lawn with ornaments and inflatable figures to a Christmas tree in a large planter at the centre of your space. You could even make your own miniature Christmas village, using a few small houses, tiny Christmas trees, a gravel or bark pathway and some battery-powered lights to create a magical winter display. Add miniature figures, little wooden signs or small decorations to give the village some personality. If you have children, it could even become something they can help put together and rearrange throughout December.

Whatever you prefer, having one clear focal point gives you somewhere to start without the garden becoming cluttered. It’s also a useful option if you’re decorating on a budget. Instead of buying lots of individual decorations, you can put more thought into one display and then add to it over the years.

3. Make your garden fence part of your Christmas display

When you’re thinking about how to decorate your garden for Christmas, don’t forget about the fence. It’s already there, takes up no extra space and gives you plenty of room to add a few festive touches. It can also help bring the different parts of your garden display together.

One of the simplest options is to add some lights along the top of the fence. A single row of outdoor lights can give the garden a lovely glow after dark, while wrapping a few lights around the posts adds a little more detail. If you have a gate, hanging a wreath in the middle is an easy way to make the entrance feel more Christmassy.

There’s plenty of room for other decorations, too. Lightweight wreaths, stars, bells, oversized baubles and festive signs can all be hung from a suitable fence or gate. You could space a few decorations along the length of the fence, or keep everything around the gate if you’d rather create one main feature. A ‘North Pole’ or ‘Santa’s Workshop’ sign would also fit nicely if you’ve created a Christmas village elsewhere in the garden.

Before hanging anything, make sure it’s suitable for outdoor use and secure it properly. Anything hanging from the fence should be able to cope with winter weather without coming loose or damaging the panels – and if the fence is looking a little worse for wear, now could be the perfect time to replace a damaged panel or tidy up any tired sections before dressing it for Christmas.

4. Add festive touches to your garden decking

If you have decking, Christmas is a great excuse to turn it into a cosy outdoor space. On milder December days, it can be a lovely spot for a hot drink, a catch-up with friends or simply a few minutes outside with the Christmas lights on around you. With the right touches, your decking can feel just as inviting as the rest of your home.

Start with a clean slate. Sweep away the leaves and twigs that have built up over autumn and clean the decking. From there, consider what you can add to make it feel cosy. That might be LED lanterns to add a lovely glow after dark, a table centrepiece of evergreen branches, pine cones and Christmas decorations, or even a small potted Christmas tree.

Comfort is important too, particularly if you’re planning to spend time outside. Add a couple of cushions, a cosy throw and a small outdoor rug to make the seating feel more inviting. Choose outdoor fabrics if you plan to leave them outside, and bring anything unsuitable for winter weather indoors when you’re finished.

If you have a pergola over the decking, it gives you another opportunity to add some lighting. Wind a string of outdoor lights around the beams or hang them above the seating area to create a soft glow overhead. Paired with a couple of lanterns at ground level, this gives the space a little more depth and makes it feel much warmer once it gets dark.

5. Have a go at making your own decorations

Remember: you don’t have to buy all your Christmas garden decorations ready-made. Making a few yourself can be a fun way to give the garden a more personal feel, and it’s a great excuse to get the whole family involved. Kids can help paint, decorate and put together some of the simpler projects, while you can take care of anything that needs a little more care or precision. From quick afternoon activities to projects you can build up over a few days, here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Wooden Christmas trees and stars – turn leftover timber into simple Christmas shapes for the garden. Cut trees or stars in different sizes and group them together in a planter, beside a pathway or near your seating area. Leave the timber natural for a rustic look, paint it in festive colours or add a few outdoor lights to make the shapes stand out after dark.

  • Pine cone decorations – gather fallen pine cones and use them to add some natural texture to your Christmas display. Fill a basket with them, scatter a few around the base of a potted Christmas tree or arrange them in a planter alongside evergreen branches. Leave them natural for a woodland feel, or spray paint them gold for a festive effect.

  • Jar lanterns – give empty glass jars a new purpose by turning them into simple garden lanterns. Fill each jar with battery-powered fairy lights and place them along a patio, around your seating area or on a sturdy outdoor table. You can also tie ribbon around the rim or add a small sprig of greenery to give them a more festive finish.

  • Festive planters – brighten up an empty plant pot or container with a mixture of winter greenery and Christmas decorations. Fill it with evergreen branches, holly and pine cones, then add a few weather-resistant baubles, stars or ribbon for some colour. Position one by the front door, at the end of a pathway or in a bare corner that needs a little extra attention.

  • Christmas wreaths – give your garden gate or front door a homemade Christmas touch with a wreath you’ve put together yourself. Start with a simple wreath base and build it up with evergreen foliage, pine cones, dried orange slices, berries and a wide ribbon in a colour that suits the rest of your decorations.

  • Flower pot snowmen – turn a few old plastic flower pots into a merry snowman for the garden. Paint the pots white and stack them securely, then add black dots for the eyes and buttons, an orange carrot-shaped nose and a scarf around the top. An old woolly hat can finish it off, while small twigs make simple arms. Let the kids help with the painting and decorating, then place your snowman beside a path, on the decking or near your Christmas display.
